At O’Brien Palmer, we are proud to have team members who bring not only exceptional skills to their work but also deeply inspiring personal stories. We’d like to introduce you to Skala Sourani, a Senior Accountant whose incredible personal journey has shaped her approach to supporting clients through some of their most challenging times through her career in insolvency and business advisory.
Skala’s journey to Australia wasn’t easy. As a first-generation refugee from Iraq, she spent two years in transit, much of it on a boat and in detention centres as a very young girl, before finally settling in Australia. Learning a new language and adapting to a completely different life taught her resilience, determination, and empathy, qualities that now make her a standout in the insolvency industry.
For Skala, helping businesses navigate insolvency hits close to home.
“Admitting your business is struggling is not easy. But seeking help can make all the difference. We’re here to guide you, help you regain control, and give you a chance to move forward.”
A Passion for Making an Impact
When Skala joined O’Brien Palmer two years ago, she knew very little about insolvency. Fresh out of university with a degree in Accounting and Business Analytics, she was drawn to the role because of its variety and human impact. “No two days are the same,” she explains. “I get to meet Directors, understand their stories, and help them through difficult situations. It’s not just numbers, it’s about people and their businesses.”
Skala recently worked with a young business owner who shared a similar background story to her, as a refugee from Iraq. At just 18, this director started his own business but found himself facing hardship. Through a Small Business Restructuring, Skala and the OBP team stepped in to help him find a second chance. “He deserves it, and I hope we can help him get back on his feet,” Skala says, underscoring the real, life-changing impact of OBP’s work.
Breaking Barriers in Insolvency
As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Skala sees a unique opportunity to bring compassion and understanding to the table.
“Insolvency can feel intimidating for clients. Many come from non-English-speaking backgrounds like mine. Sometimes it’s pride or fear that stops them from seeking help. But we’re not here to judge. We’re here to listen, understand, and guide them through to a better future.”
Skala’s fluency in Kurdish, Arabic, and English allows her to relate to clients from diverse backgrounds, particularly those struggling to navigate cultural and language barriers.
Since starting as an intermediate accountant, Skala has advanced to a senior accountant role, supported by OBP’s team-oriented and nurturing environment.
“When I first started, I was shy, barely able to make eye contact. But my mentors at OBP took the time to guide me, explain the complexities of the Corporations Act, case law, and insolvency work. I’m now on track to pursue my CA certification and aim to become a Supervisor and Manager.”
A Message to Those Who Are Struggling
Skala’s story is a reminder that hardship can lead to opportunity, and she is proud of her work and impact that she offers to OBP clients.
“If your business is struggling, don’t wait. Reach out early. I understand how hard it can be to ask for help, but we’re here to guide you. We’re not here to judge – just to help you find the best way forward.”
We are very proud to have Skala as a key person in our team at O’Brien Palmer. Combining her resilience, empathy, and expertise, we’re committed to helping businesses overcome turmoil and rebuild stronger futures.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by financial challenges, don’t wait. Give us a call. Together, we’ll explore the options and help you regain control.
